Did You Know That Glass...

  • is a liquid (albeit a very slow-moving one)?
  • is made from sand melted at 1700 degrees Celsius?
  • can be woven to make something called fibreglass (real glass ... and it can cut you)?
There is a type of rock found in the desert that is made of glass. When the lightning strikes the sand, the heat of that amazing electrical bolt instantly melts the sand. The cooled product is glass.

Ever heard of glass blowing? I watched it once. A hollow metal rod is dipped into the liquid, and a person on the other end blows it as if it is a bubble. Then it gets left a bit to cool. The thin layer cools quickly, so you have to work fast at shaping it.
